Boy, I hardly ever post these days, eh? Well, my two readers probably hardly ever check. So I won't even think twice about going on a little rant. Here's the thing. I just read this book, and it so perfectly sums up a thought that I've been having and need to vent.
I've posted before about the feeling of entitlement my kids tend to have and how it drives me crazy, and it's partly that. But not just the feeling they have; it's the total lack of effort they are willing in to put into achieving anything deserving. And here I should clarify that I don't mean my kids this time. I mean the good old US of A and it's inhabitants, particularly the more youthful among them. There's a bit of scorn for effort in general, like anything you have to work for is an infringement of your rights, is a drain on your freedom, man. I'm just saying that respect in general ought to be based on worth, and it seems like we've become afraid both to demand achievement and call out garbage when we see it. There's a real push, it seems to me, to be so very careful not to offend, not to place our own values on other people's work. But that just means we lie a lot, and promote sub standard achievement.
Which brings me to the second point--tolerance and political correctness. I find it irritating to be pushed into sounding so conservative, but are we so ashamed of having values that we have to pretend that all values are equally valid? I mean, don't values by definition mean that we hold certain ideas or behaviors above others? How have we become so bullied that we just pack our ideals away and say, hey, sure--anything goes! I'm sorry, but I believe that there are some ways of living that are better than others. I'm not going to stone you for choosing different values, but I'm not ready to be shamed into denying my own. And it's that shaming that I see going on all around me and that is so wrong.
OK, I can't say any of this well. So here's a passage from Wallace Stegner's All the Little Live Things, wherein the character speaking has just been asked what he thinks about the [human] race in the context of a disturbing young man named Peck.
"I think the race will multiply, for it is unfortunately very fertile. Since marriage is one of the conventions the Pecks are busy breaking down, more and more children will be illegitimate or deprived of the dubious advantages of what we used to call a home. Because of that and other strains, more and more adults will be hoodlums, criminals, and the effectively dispossessed, and from these both our demagogues and our novelists will increasingly take their morals and their attitudes and their lingo. First we help create these underworlds, and then out of guilt and sympathy we imitate them...."
Proposition 8, anyone? And this was written in the 60's.
"We imitate it out of pity, and we create it out of pity. Any civilization that achieves anything has losers--one of the reasons it achieves is that it has clear ways of telling its losers from its heroes. We have given up heroes--they go in for achievement. So we have more and more surviving losers, whom we imitate because we can't be ruthless enough to put them down...."
I guess I believe in heroes and losers. I believe in effort. In achievement. In making choices and living with the consequences. In respect, for the love of all. Whew. I feel better.

Great post, Hoochie Goochie.
So how do you feel about proposition 8? :)
"Because of that and other strains, more and more adults will be hoodlums, criminals, and the effectively dispossessed..." I had a long conversation with someone today who believes fervently that taking away a woman's "right to choose"(abortion) would result in just that.
Interesting, interesting.
Keep the posts coming!
On the contrary (to something you said in your post), I think you said it all VERY well. I love reading your thoughts -- you are so articulate and everything you say is very valid and well thought out. I loved it.
Bravo, Court! See? Now you know you have at least 3 readers. Don't worry, as long as you continue to fight that conservative pull, you will be well tolerated. Throw aside that shame, however, and embrace conservatism, and the game changes. I know at least one who is tired of liberals flaunting their tolerance of everything and anything, save it be conservativism. Proposition 8 aside; let's not pretend that there are no things that do not deserve tolerance. Some things do not.
So Aryn, have you read Freakonomics? He talks about the unexpected drop in crime and links it to legalized abortion. It's pretty compelling.
I'm with Brady. Some things do not deserve tolerance. Drunk drivers = no tolerance. Child molesters = no tolerance. Apparently it's okay to be a woman, then become a man, then get pregnant and have a baby. But first your "wife" who is a woman (but looks like a man) must take hormones to start producing milk so she can breastfeed the baby you - a legal man with a uterus - gave birth to. Whew. Glad we're all so tolerant of this. I'll bet that baby girl is going to be so happy about the wack jobs she has to call "parents". Anyway, why should marriage just be for a man and woman? I can just get it legally changed what you call me. Maybe I can get my favorite pet fish legally called a man if I have a unit installed on it surgically. Then I can marry him in California. I love him so much after all, and we must have our rights.
I am not discussing my views on legalized abortion or proposition 8 on your blog, Courtney... not falling for that... :) But I loved this post, and yes, I agree that we can't roll over and let anything fly. And when did Brady put a picture up? Snazzy, Brady!!
p.s. Jan Mason's right - your writing is so very good.
Well, I would hate for you to think that only the Fitz's read your thought provoking stuff!! Here is my thing... I am tired of being told that because I am liberal or conservative that I have to buy the whole value package. I think I am plenty smart enough (with that fabulous Doherty education) to decide where I stand on the issues of society and make my own decisions. I like it when I ask someone, what is your platform, and their response is, I am tons better than what we have. Interesting... what is it that "we" have?? Another thing agreed...Freakonomics is interesting.
I too, read your blog. And ummm, I got nothin'. I am still in la la land, recovering from my FABULOUS vacation. I'll let you know my thoughts when my opinion returns to me.
I have to disagree with your opinion here. It sounds like you think society is full of under achievers and losers. Kobe gets about 3-4 hours of homework a day, he's definitely being pushed hard. Environment is everything! Yes there are a lot of underachievers, but most of them will not be successful or happy. That's their problem not yours. The majority of underachievers, unfortunately are insecure, lack a sence of efficacy, and are trapped enviromentally with no sence of direction. This also doesn't have anything to do with you. The great thing about your situation is you do have a strong sence of efficacy, you are secure, and you are surrounded by an environment that encourages success. So the biggest problem I have with your rant is you sound very condescending. You should be very happy. Anyway proposition 8 like any other proposition is good and bad. It's not just one or the other. I am very opposed to the words liberal and conservative. People should be smarter than that!
Umm, sorry for the rant! I may have misundertood your post. Hey aren't you glad you have so many people reading your blog.
You are a very good writer Court. I'm always jealous when I read what you wrote on the page where you wrote the words that I was reading of yours :) Uh, Tiff? You've been listening to a certain someone a bit too much. "Apparently it's okay to be a woman, then become a man, then get pregnant and have a baby. But first your "wife" who is a woman (but looks like a man) must take hormones to start producing milk so she can breastfeed the baby you - a legal man with a uterus - gave birth to. Whew. Glad we're all so tolerant of this." Call me crazy, but I don't think most people are tolerant of that sort of thing. Also, I've heard you voice your concern about transgendered "things" having babies several times. Don't fear, it's not common practice. Thats why it was in the news. It was news worthy. In fact the article next to it was about a 500lb baby who broke a world record by tight-rope walking the English Channel. JK
and B, that is indeed a snazzy pic.
